Kaspersky Lab: Companies Consider Cloud Computing A Threat To IT Security

Research carried out by Kaspersky Lab claims that 23% of companies see cloud computing as a threat to their IT security. The online survey reached 1300 senior professionals in 11 countries.


David Emm, Senior Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab, has confirmed the two key driving developments of cloud services:


“The first is cost. The economies of scale that can be achieved by storing data or hosting applications in the cloud can result in significant savings for businesses,”


“The second is flexibility. Employees can access data from anywhere, at any time, using any device – including mobile devices. So businesses can benefit from an 'always-on' workforce. However, this research proves companies still harbour concerns about implementing cloud services.”


Emm continues to explain that on the other hand, there are those who believe the cloud offers built-in security, which can be a potentially dangerous presumption and  regardless of the perception there must always be measures in place to ensure that the cloud is used in the safest way possible.


Emm also provided further advice for companies to consider before moving to the cloud, beginning with the remembrance that data stored in the cloud is accessed from an endpoint within a business. So if a cybercriminal is able to compromise the endpoint, they gain access to the data – wherever it is stored.


Here are actions that can be taken to help provide further security, as suggested by Emm:


  1. Recognise that endpoint security remains paramount for businesses.

  2. Data should always be encrypted, in case of a breach.

  3. Before signing up consider all the ramifications of storing data in the cloud.

  4. Business Continuity – Prepare for storing data in the cloud and the difficulties this can bring.
